Strap Straitjacket

This is a straitjacket that I made for myself around May 1999. It happens to fit John reasonably well. I have recently (November 2001) returned from Northern California where John modeled the straitjacket with pictures "in-hand". The construction of the straitjacket is quite unique. The body is enclosed in a "net" made of 2 inch nylon strapping. The "entry" to the straitjacket is near the neck where the straitjacket closes with two nylon buckles. The arms are enclosed in a fabric that was originally intended for air/gas filtration. In addition to the strapping and cloth there are 4 large D-rings and 44 small D-rings. The large D-rings are at each shoulder and at the ends of the sleeves. Each arm has 20 smaller D-rings and the front and sides of the chest has 24 smaller D-rings. This design has proven to be quite versatile and extremely difficult to escape from if applied with even minor care. The major down side of the design is that it only fits a small fraction of the population because it is not very adjustable.

A view of the lower front of the jacket. Note the straps around the legs are attached to the crotch strap and the side straps. This is not a straitjacket that can be pulled off over one's head.

The next three pictures show a "traditional" application of the straitjacket, arms crossed across in the front and tied at the back. This could be made a bit more secure by threading the rope at least once under one of the back straps.

Here the jacket is used with the arms positioned in the back. This position can be used with most straitjackets if caution is exercised. On some individuals, even if the straitjacket is applied loosely, it can become very uncomfortable quickly.

In this three picture sequence, the shoulder D-rings are tied up and the sleeve D-rings are tied up-and-away from the body.
